Apartment fire started by toddler with lighter

ESCANABA — A toddler with a lighter was the cause of a fire at an Escanaba apartment complex Monday night, according to the Escanaba Public Safety Department.

Officers were called to Sand Hill Town Homes, 711 Charlotte Court, at 5:43 p.m. when a witness saw flames and smoke coming from a window. When officers arrived the entire livingroom was engulfed in flames. Officers quickly set up and entered the apartment and extinguished the fire.

Because of this, attached apartments on both sides were saved, officers said.

The original apartment sustained major damage and all the contents inside were destroyed. Water and smoke damage were contained to that apartment.

The origin of the blaze was a livingroom couch and the fire was started by a toddler using a lighter, officers said. The fire remains under investigation.

One firefighter suffered minor injuries, but none of the apartment complex residents were injured.

Escanaba Public Safety was assisted at the scene by the Ford River Volunteer Fire Department, City of Escanaba Electric and Water Departments, Rampart DTE and Delta County Central Dispatch.
