Suspicious object forces downtown evacuation

MARQUETTE — Businesses in downtown Marquette were evacuated Tuesday morning after a suspicious object was located in front of the Federal Building, which houses the United States Postal Service and the U.S. District Court, Western District of Michigan Courthouse.

The object was located at approximately 9:55 a.m. in the 200 block of West Washington Street. A photo shared by the Marquette Police Department shows the suspicious object resting atop the FedEx drop box in front of the Federal Building. Businesses and other buildings in the 200 block were evacuated by police.

“As a safety precautionary measure, a perimeter in the downtown area was secured and traffic was rerouted,” MPD said in a Facebook post. Businesses in the immediate area were asked to evacuate as well until the area was deemed safe.”

Police said the suspicious object was later determined to not be a threat, and traffic and businesses resumed normal operations just before 11 a.m.

Assisting the Marquette Police Department at the scene were the Northern Michigan University Police Department, the Michigan State Police, the Marquette City Fire Department and the Marquette County Sheriff’s Office.
