Train derailment cause under investigation

ESCANABA — A Chicago and North Western train derailed Tuesday night at Escanaba’s west city limit near 19th Avenue North. At approximately 7:55 p.m., Escanaba Public Safety was dispatched to the derailment. The derailment was not near a residential area and did not obstruct any vehicle traffic. Both conductors were able to get out on their own and were eventually treated for non life threatening injuries.

According to Escanaba Public Safety, all of the cars attached to the train were empty. A small fuel spill from the engine was also noted by officers, but its role in the derailment — if any — was unknown. The nature of the derailment is under investigation and clean up in still ongoing.

Escanaba Public Safety was assisted by Delta County Central Dispatch Center, Rampart EMS, CN Railroad and CN Railroad Police and UP Environmental.
