ESCANABA — With many local residents stuck in their homes due to the coronavirus pandemic, a new Facebook group has been created with the goal of helping people in Delta County stay connected with one another.

Delta County Administrator Emily DeSalvo, the creator of “Delta County’s Social Distancing Kindness,” said she was inspired by similar groups that have been established in response to the pandemic.

“I can’t take credit for the idea – it was going around … across the country, and also globally, too,” she said.

Delta County’s Social Distancing Kindness was created on Saturday, March 21. As of last week, it already had 1,895 members.

First impressions of the group have been “very positive,” DeSalvo said. She noted it has been successfully keeping people in the area connected so far — and it has even helped people create new friendships.

“It’s made connections between people in the community that hopefully will sustain even past this point of social distancing,” she said.

Members of Delta County’s Social Distancing Kindness have voiced their appreciation of people on the front lines of coronavirus response efforts, as well.

“It helps to give our support to the healthcare workers and first responders and essential employees that … can’t choose to stay home during this,” DeSalvo said.

The group will provide its members with weekly activities. For the group’s first week, members have been asked to put up rainbow displays in their homes and to hide stuffed animals in their windows.

“We’re going to have more challenges and activities to come,” DeSalvo said.

DeSalvo encouraged people in Delta County — as well as those who do not live in the county, but have ties to the area — to join the group.

“Anybody is welcome to join,” she said.

The group can be found by searching for “Delta County’s Social Distancing Kindness” on Facebook.
