Blaze destroys home in Escanaba

Ilsa Matthes | Daily Press Fire destroyed a home at 1219 1st Avenue North in Escanaba overnight. Escanaba Public Safety Officers were at the scene for eight hours.

ESCANABA — A north Escanaba home was destroyed after it caught fire late Monday night.

Escanaba Public Safety Department officers were called to a kitchen fire at 1219 1st Ave. N. at 11:04 p.m.

According to officers, all the occupants were outside of the two-story residence when they arrived.

Police said the entire back end of the house was fully engulfed in flames.

Officers battled the fire for nearly eight hours, clearing the scene around 7 a.m. today.

Officers described the residence as a total loss.

Police said this morning they were unsure if the home was insured.

A neighboring dwelling — located within two feet of the engulfed home — sustained no damage in the blaze.

No injuries were reported, officers said.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

Escanaba Public Safety was assisted by the Delta County Sheriff’s Department, Delta County Central Dispatch, Rampart, DTE, Escanaba City Electric, Red Cross and the Ford River Volunteer Fire Department.
