ESCANABA — A local jewelry business recently celebrated its 51st anniversary. The business, Nyman Jewelers, is co-owned by Sue Parker and her father Eric Nyman.

“Dad started the business — we actually started across the street, where the empty lot is now,” Parker said.

Before starting Nyman Jewelers, Nyman worked at a jewelry store in Sault Ste. Marie. In 1968, he bought what was Feldstein Jewelers in Escanaba from the widow of former owner Manny Feldstein.

The store moved into its current location — which was previously home to another jewelry store called Blomstrom & Petersen — in 1972, and has been there ever since.

Parker said things have been going well for Nyman’s.

“We can’t complain — our numbers are trending up,” she said.

Many different types of jewelry are available at the store, including some one-of-a-kind pieces.

“Primarily, we sell karat gold jewelry or silver,” Parker said.

Parker also said Nyman’s offers a number of services, like jewelry and watch repairs.

“We do our repairs in-house — either Dad or I do them in the back room,” she said.

In early October, Nyman’s marked 51 years of being in business.

“We celebrated it by, of course, having a sale, and then we also collected donations for (Tri-County) Safe Harbor,” Parker said.

In the future, some changes will be made to the storefront for Nyman’s through the Escanaba Downtown Development Authority’s facade improvement program.

“We are part of the next round of the facades,” Parker said.

New windows will be installed in the building Nyman’s is located in as part of this project, and granite will be installed on the lower portion of the windows. Matching funds from the owners of the building and Nyman’s will allow for a new roof to be installed on the building and for the store to take out its drop ceiling, returning to its original plaster ceiling with molding.

Aside from this, Parker said she and her father do not plan to make any major changes at the store.

“(We) just want to keep going,” she said.
