Fall color starts in U.P.

ESCANABA — Fall colors have begun to arrive in the Upper Peninsula, but few trees have reportedly changed color in Delta County at this point in the season.

The Upper Peninsula Travel and Recreation Association (UPTRA) provides fall color reports for the U.P. on its website, www.uptravel.com, each Wednesday during the fall color season. According to UPTRA, peak fall colors are normally seen in the area during the last week of September and the first two weeks of October.

In Delta County, between 0 and 15 percent of trees had changed color as of Wednesday. The county’s peak fall colors are expected to arrive in early October.

In other counties in the central U.P. — including the counties of Alger, Dickinson, Marquette and Menominee — between 10 and 50 percent of trees have changed color. Peak colors in these areas are expected to be seen between the end of September and the second or third week of October.

In Chippewa, Luce, Mackinac and Schoolcraft counties in the eastern U.P., between 10 and 40 percent of trees have changed color. These counties are expected to reach their peak fall colors in the end of September and early October.

In the western U.P. counties of Baraga, Gogebic, Ontonagon, Houghton, Keweenaw and Iron, between 20 and 60 percent of trees have changed color. Peak colors in these areas are expected to be seen between the last week of September and the first week of October.
