Golf ball drop fundraiser part of Rock the Dock event

ESCANABA — The second annual Golf Ball Drop will be held Saturday at 7 p.m. by the Escanaba Municipal Dock. Escanaba Recreation Department Director Kim Peterson is holding the fundraiser during the city’s Rock the Dock event. Six hundred golf ball tickets are being sold at $25 each. The golf balls are numbered to match tickets purchased for the fundraiser.

Dombrowski Tree Service is donating the use of a lift truck to hoist a basket of numbered golf balls high in the air above a bulls-eye. The balls are released, and the spot where they land on the ground determines what prizes are won.

Top prize is $3,000 and given to the owner of the golf ball that lands in the bulls-eye or closest. The owner of the second closest golf ball to the bulls-eye will receive second prize, $1,000. The owners of the third and fourth golf balls away from the bulls-eye receive $500 and $250 respectively. There will be a prize of $250 given to the owner of the golf ball that is furthest away from the bulls-eye. In addition, there will be 10 bonus prizes given out to the owners of the golf balls that land on one of 10 bonus squares. If more than one golf ball lands on a bonus square, there will be a drawing, awarding one owner a prize. Some of the bonus prize items are a fire ring, load of wood, crate of 50 fire starters, grill package, cooler package, gift certificates and hotel stays.

The idea of a golf ball drop came from local resident Julie Moker, who saw a golf ball drop in another community as a fundraiser. Peterson thought it would be a good idea to try the fundraiser here last year and it was a success.

Other activities planned during Rock the Dock include a fishing pond.

“Kids can fish for bluegill. They can’t keep the fish as it is catch and release,” said Peterson. “The fish will come from the DNR Pocket Park by the fairgrounds.”

The pond is sponsored by the Bay de Noc Great Lakes Sport Fishermen.

From 5 to 9 p.m. there will be a bounce house, magic show and until 10 p.m., a petting zoo. Starting at 6 until 9:30 p.m. the Jam Band from Gladstone will entertain with rock, pop and country music.

Tickets for the Golf Ball Drop are available at Rosy’s Diner, Johnston Printing, and the offices of Big Brothers/Big Sisters of the Bay Area and Escanaba Recreation Department. All proceeds go to supporting Big Brothers/Big Sisters of the Bay Area and the Escanaba Recreation Department to benefit youth in the area.

Employees of the recreation department will be at Verso selling tickets for the Golf Ball Drop today from 3 to 7 p.m.
