History, bridge to be celebrated

MANISTIQUE — A pair of events focusing on the history of Manistique are scheduled to take place tomorrow.

From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, the Schoolcraft County Historical Society will present the 15th annual Pioneer Day at Pioneer Park.

“What that’ll be is food, fun and entertainment for the whole family,” vice president of the historical society Paul Walker said.

Many different activities will be offered as part of Pioneer Day. These will include a suffragette skit at 11 a.m., children’s pie-eating contests at 1:30 p.m. and an “adults vs. kids” spelling bee at 2 p.m.

Pioneer Day attendees will be able to visit vendors selling food and arts and crafts, new historical displays in the water tower and a book sale. Karl Bohnak will also make a special appearance with his book “Sunburns to Snowstorms.”

A jelly bean jar fundraiser and the “Buy a Candle Fundraiser” will be held in support of the historical society during Pioneer Day.

“We’re trying to raise funds for our new Schoolcraft County Historical Society museum,” Walker said.

Additionally, all proceeds from Pioneer Day will support the historical society.

At 3 p.m., the Siphon Bridge Walk will be held. The walk will commemorate the bridge’s 100th anniversary.

In the past, the Siphon Bridge was below the level of the water it crossed. The bridge received national recognition as a result of its unique design — on April 18, 1956, it was featured in Ripley’s Believe It or Not!’s widely-syndicated newspaper feature.

While the Siphon Bridge has since been converted to function as a more conventional bridge, Walker said it is still an iconic part of Manistique’s history.

“A lot of people today still come looking for the Siphon Bridge,” he said.

The historical society, along with Manistique’s recreation board, will host another event focusing on the Siphon Bridge Saturday evening. From 6 p.m. to midnight, the Siphon Bridge Centennial Celebration will take place at the Little Bear West Arena.

After an opening ceremony, Schoolcraft County businesses that have been in the area for 100 years will be recognized. Then, a cake-cutting ceremony will take place, with cake provided by Jack’s Fresh Market.

Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4420 will have a beer garden at the event. Live music will be offered during the evening — Backroads 906 will perform from 7:30 to 9 p.m., while Angels & Outlaws will play from 9 p.m. to midnight.
