Newberry man arrested for attempted murder

NEWBERRY — A Newberry man was arrested for attempted murder early Friday morning, according to State Police at the Sault Ste. Marie Post.

The victim reported another man broke into his home, fired several shots at him and struck him with the firearm at 7 p.m. Thursday. The victim was able to flee the residence and report the assault to the police.

The Newberry man suspected of the assault is related to the victim. He was found at his own residence in Newberry and refused to turn himself over to police at around 11 p.m. Thursday.

Troopers and deputies from the Luce County Sheriff’s Office requested assistance from the MSP Emergency Support Team (EST). EST members arrived on scene and negotiated with the man for several hours.

The man eventually gave up and was taken into custody at around 2:20 a.m. Friday. No one was injured in the incident, which remains under investigation.

The MSP Sault Ste. Marie Post troopers were assisted by MSP detectives, canine officers, the Emergency Support Team, Upper Peninsula Substance Enforcement Team, Luce County Sheriff’s Office, and Luce County Emergency Medical Services.
