Man charged in police standoff in Escanaba

ESCANABA — An Escanaba man who was arrested after pointing a handgun at police and barricading himself within his apartment Wednesday morning was arraigned on multiple felony charges in Delta County District Court Wednesday.

David Christopher Tebear, 54, of 1531 Sheridan Road, Escanaba, was officially charged with one count of malicious destruction of property more than $1,000 but less than $20,000, a five-year felony and a maximum fine of $10,000.

Tebear was also charged with: assault with a dangerous weapon (felonious assault), a four-year felony with a maximum fine of $2,000; weapons – felony firearm – pneumatic gun, a two-year felony; two counts of police officer – assaulting/resisting/obstructing, each a two-year felony and maximum fine of $2,000; and weapons – dangerous weapon – carrying with unlawful intent, a five-year felony with a maximum fine of $2,500.

At around 10:50 p.m. Tuesday, Escanaba Public Safety Department officers were investigating a report of damage to property at 1531 Sheridan Road when Tebear pointed a handgun at officers and barricaded himself within his apartment.

Officers established a perimeter, evacuated other tenants within the building and closed down Sheridan Road to traffic.

The Michigan State Police Emergency Response Team was requested for assistance.

Tebear was arrested without incident at around 5:40 a.m. Wednesday.

Tebear’s bond was set at $100,000 cash or surety.

His preliminary examination was scheduled for April 11.
