Barricaded gunman arrested in Escanaba

ESCANABA — An Escanaba man was arrested after pointing a handgun at police and barricading himself within his apartment this morning.

At around 10:50 p.m. Tuesday, Escanaba Public Safety Department officers were investigating a report of damage to property at 1531 Sheridan Road when a 54-year-old Escanaba man pointed a handgun at officers and barricaded himself within his apartment.

Officers established a perimeter, evacuated other tenants with the building and closed down Sheridan Road to traffic.

The Michigan State Police Emergency Response Team was requested for assistance. Once officers from the team arrived, communication with the man was established.

The man was arrested without incident at around 5:40 a.m. today. He is facing felonious assault and felony firearm charges.

Assisting with the incident were the Michigan State Police Gladstone Post, the Michigan State Police Emergency Response Team, Delta County Sheriff’s Department, Rampart EMS, Delta County Central Dispatch and the Delta County Prosecutor’s office.

The identity of the man will not be released until he is formally arraigned in Delta County’s 94th District Court.

No more information is being released at this time as the investigation is still ongoing, Escanaba Public Safety investigators said this morning.
