ESCANABA — Sub-zero temperatures gripping the area and the Midwest have prompted cancellation of schools, government offices and some events locally.

All area schools announced they would be closed through Thursday by Tuesday afternoon. Bitter cold temperatures are expected to lift by Friday.

Due to safety concerns for students and employees, Bay College closed today with the exception of the performance of the comedy Men Are From Mars – Women Are From Venus LIVE! in the Besse Theater at 7:30 p.m. tonight at the Escanaba campus. The Besse Center will open at 6:30 p.m.

The Delta County Chamber’s Business After Hours scheduled for today at North Woods Place is postponed until further notice due to extreme weather conditions.

Escanaba’s ice skating rink at the civic center is closed until Friday.

All state of Michigan offices are closed throughout the state. Even mail service was suspended in the U.P.

Schoolcraft County offices and courts are also closed today.
