Bitter cold weather to linger most of week

ESCANABA — All area schools closed today due to bitterly cold temperatures and even lower wind chills, which are expected to continue through most of the week.

In Escanaba, temperatures are expected to reach a high of 3 degrees and dip to -5 below today, Manistique will see even colder temperatures with a high near zero and overnight lows around -11 below, and Menominee will be comparatively warmer with a high near 7 and lows around -4 below.

According to the National Weather Service, the cold temperatures are expected through Thursday, with the worst conditions occurring late Tuesday through Thursday. Temperatures will be in the low single digits and overnight lows between -5 and -25 below during this period. Wind chills during the week will frequently range from -20 to -40 below.

The blast of arctic air will also bring more snow to the Upper Peninsula. Snow accumulations of between 3 and 5 inches are expected in Delta, southern Schoolcraft, Dickinson, and Iron Counties today. Menominee will see between 4 and 7 inches.
