Search on for new county treasurer

ESCANABA — Delta County is one step closer to finding a replacement for County Treasurer Tom Sabor, who will be retiring in January, following a meeting of the Delta County Treasurer’s Appointment Board Tuesday afternoon.

Sabor’s last day as treasurer will be Jan. 4, 2019, and his replacement will hold the office until Dec. 31, 2020. He was present as the three member board consisting of Board Chair and Probate Court Judge Robert Goebel, Delta County Prosecuting Attorney Brett Gardner, and County Clerk Nancy Kolich discussed how to fill the position.

“We did this — it seems like not too long ago — but it was seven years (ago),” said Goebel.

Basing their criteria on the last time a county treasurer was appointed, the board determined that applicants for the position will be required to submit a letter, a resume, a list of any state or federal convictions they may have, and three references with addresses to the clerk’s office. Applicants will also be required to fill out the county employment application, which can be picked up at the clerk’s office or downloaded from the county’s website, www.deltacountymi.org. This application includes authorization for the county to conduct a background check on the candidate.

No formal requirements as far as education or job experience were determined by the board, however it was noted that a background in finance would be preferable.

“The statutory requirements are that, to be eligible to hold office of the upcoming treasurer, the appointee must be a registered and qualified electorate of Delta County and must be eligible to be bonded,” said Kolich.

All of the documents must be submitted to the clerk’s office by 4 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 19. The board will hold another meeting on Oct. 25 at 2 p.m., and interviews for applicants being considered will take place at a meeting on Nov. 8.

“We really don’t know how many we’re going to interview. It would depend. We may interview three people, might be two, might be four, based on the nature of the applications,” said Goebel.

Applications may be dropped off at the clerk’s office between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.
