Local events planned for summer

ESCANABA — Memorial Day marks the unofficial start of summer. In Delta and Schoolcraft counties, several events will take place throughout this season. Some major events scheduled for this summer in the area include:

– Delta County’s summer event season will kick off with the Krusin’ Klassics Fun Run, which will take place on Friday, June 1 and Saturday, June 2. The vehicle parade through Escanaba will begin at 7 p.m. Friday, and the car show will be held Saturday at the U.P. State Fairgrounds.

– The Island Resort Championship will be held at the Island Resort and Casino’s Sweetgrass Golf Club June 22-24. This annual event is a part of the Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) Symetra Tour.

– Independence Day celebrations will be held on July 4 in Gladstone, Escanaba, Bark River, and Garden. Manistique’s Independence Day celebration will follow on July 7.

– FolkFest is scheduled for July 13 and 14 in Manistique this year. The annual event features booths from community organizations, live music, food and craft vendors, children’s games, and more.

– The 59th Annual National Trappers Convention and Outdoor Expo is set for July 26-28 at the U.P. State Fairgrounds. Presenters at this event will include Alaska-based trapper Marty Meirotto and South Dakota’s Tom Miranda. The convention will also feature more than 100 vendors and about 160 tailgaters.

– On July 27 and 28, the Schoolcraft County Fair, Horse Show, and Pageant will take place. The fair will start at 4 p.m. during its first day and will open at noon on its second day.

-The Waterfront Art Festival will be held on Aug. 4 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in Escanaba. Over 50 vendor booths will be set up as part of this event. The festival will also feature entertainment, food vendors, and raffles.

-The Daily Press Children’s Back-to-School Health Fair is set for Aug. 5. This event will take place at the Ruth Butler Building at the U.P. State Fairgrounds, and will run from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

-The U.P. State Fair will return to Escanaba Aug. 13-19. Grandstand entertainment for this year’s fair will include UPIR Racing and musical acts including Pop Evil, Hanson, and Granger Smith. More musical acts will be announced in the time leading up to the fair.

-The Rock Lions Labor Day Celebration will take place Saturday, Sept. 1. At 11 a.m., a parade will go down Main Street and M-35 in Rock. After the parade, food vendors, a beer tent, bingo and “cowpie bingo,” kids activities (including face-painting), music, a flea market, and more will be available on the Rock Lions Club grounds.

-The 43rd annual U.P. Steam and Gas Engine Association Labor Day show will be held in Escanaba at the U.P. State Fairgrounds from Aug. 31 through Sept. 3. There will be a charge for admission, though members of the association, exhibitors, and children under 14 will be admitted free.
