Assault case moves to circuit court
ESCANABA — A Bark River man was recently bound over from Delta County District Court to circuit court for allegedly assaulting a female victim during a domestic violence incident investigated by sheriff’s deputies this spring.
James David Hill, 27, of 4856 D Road, Bark River, was arrested in connection with a March 18 incident in Bark River Township, according to court records.
He was charged with the following counts: assault with intent to do great bodily harm less than murder by strangulation, a 10-year felony with a maximum fine of $5,000; interference with electronic communications, a two-year felony with a maximum fine of $1,000; and aggravated domestic violence, a one-year misdemeanor with a maximum fine of $1,000.
The above charges were recently bound over from district court to circuit court in addition to a fourth offense habitual offender charge which increases Hill’s sentencing potential to a mandatory minimum of 25 years in prison upon conviction.
Prior offenses in Schoolcraft County include convictions of criminal sexual conduct – assault with intent to commit sexual penetration, carrying a dangerous weapon with unlawful intent, and two counts of accosting children for immoral purposes.
Hill is scheduled for a hearing in circuit court on June 11 when he may make a plea or set a trial date. He remains lodged in jail in lieu of a $100,000 cash/surety bond. He has been ordered to not have alcohol or illegal drugs, not possess a firearm, and not have contact with the victim. He must also submit to random drug testing.
