Esky woman charged with strangulation

ESCANABA — An Escanaba woman arrested on one count of strangulation and one count of domestic violence remains lodged in Delta County Jail as she awaits her pretrial hearing in circuit court scheduled for next month.

Amelia Ann Emery, 28, of 416 1st Ave. S., No. 1, Escanaba, was arrested last month in connection with an alleged assault on a female victim in Escanaba on Feb. 7, 2018.

She was recently bound over from district court to circuit court on one count of assault with intent to do great bodily harm less than murder for allegedly assaulting the victim by strangulation, according to court documents. The felony carries a maximum punishment of 10 years in prison and a $5,000 fine.

Emery was also bound over on one count of domestic violence, third offense, in connection with the same incident. The felony carries a maximum sentence of five years in prison and a $5,000 fine.

Emery remains lodged in jail in lieu of 10 percent of a $35,000 bond.

In the event she posts bond, she has been ordered to have no contact with the victim. She must have no alcohol or illegal drugs, cannot enter bars and cannot possess firearms. She must undergo random drug testing. She cannot leave the county without the court’s permission and must remain in her residence from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. She must not display any assaultive or abusive behavior.

Emery is scheduled for a pretrial hearing in circuit court on April 9 when she may make a plea or set a trial date.
