County administrator resigns from position

ESCANABA — Delta County Administrator Ryan Bergman’s resignation was officially accepted during a committee of the whole meeting Friday morning. Bergman has served in the position of county administrator since May 2015.

According to Bergman, his decision to leave this position was motivated by family.

“It’s a job out east, closer to my wife’s family,” he said of his next job. Bergman did not name his new employer, as they have not yet made an official announcement of his hiring.

Bergman himself is a native of the Upper Peninsula. He grew up in Ishpeming Township, and graduated from Northern Michigan University with a master’s degree in 2010.

After graduating from NMU, Bergman worked for York County as their grants coordinator and for the City of Norfolk, Virginia’s Office of Budget and Strategic Planning in the position of principal analyst. He was working in the latter position when he was hired by Delta County to replace former county administrator Nora Viau.

Bergman said that, during his time with the county, he was most proud to have been involved with the establishment of the new Delta County Correctional Facility and efforts to mitigate the effects of rising pension costs.

“We’ve taken big steps to address both of those,” he said.

He also appreciated the support county employees have shown to both him and their fellow employees.

“We’ve had a really positive work environment,” Bergman said.

Bergman said he will be leaving his current position in late April. Before he leaves, he will recommend a version of the county’s 2018-19 budget at the Delta County Board of Commissioners’ last meeting in April so his successor does not have to go through this process.

“We’re (going to) try our best to put the next person in a position to succeed,” he said. The job description for the position of Delta County Administrator will be updated by Bergman, and this job will be posted internally through April 3. The board will either interview internal candidates or post the job externally after this point.

County officials present at Friday’s meeting expressed their satisfaction with Bergman’s performance as the administrator for Delta County.

“We have been extremely pleased with Mr. Bergman,” Delta County Board of Commissioners Chair David Rivard said.
