Parkinson Disease Symposium Sept. 27

IRON MOUNTAIN — The fourth annual Parkinson Disease symposium hosted by the local Parkinson Society and the Michigan Parkinson Foundation will be held on Friday, Sept. 27, at Bay College West Campus in Iron Mountain. Doors open at 8 a.m. CST and the program begins at 8:45 a.m. Pre-registration is necessary in order to have adequate seating and lunch. Coffee and Snacks will be available upon arrival and lunch will be provided at noon at no charge. However, donations will be accepted.

This event is open to all Parkinson Disease patients, caregivers, family and friends as well as others who may be interested. All Upper Michigan and northern Wisconsin PD patients are invited. Information is available for those who are recently diagnosed as well as those who have had the disease for some time.

The program includes keynote speaker Sheryl Jedlinski, and author and humorist, who can put a witty twist to her experiences in cooping with PD. She comes from Palatine, Ill. and has had PD for many years.

Paul Sturgul, Elder Care attorney from Hurley Wis. also joins us on the program to present answers to legal concerns as we age. His information is appropriate for the aging community in both Michigan and Wisconsin.

Dr. Tyler Chartier, a local optometrist, will speak on how Parkinson’s Disease, can cause issues with vision. This is a topic seldom discussed as a non-motor symptom of PD.

Neurologists, Dr. Aaron Ellenbogen from lower Michigan and Dr. Roman Politi of Marquette will discuss the new medications available to rescue PD patients form OFF periods. APOKYN and Inbrija have recently been approved by the FDA for use on Parkinson’s patients.

The program will end with the speakers on a panel to answer and questions from the audience Cindi Weber and Jake Miller will moderate the Q and A time.

The commons area will have services displays and information. Prizes will be available for luck ticket holders. Brief exercise periods will be held between speakers to provide some movement for those who set too long Come and take part in a long and informative day of learning and inspiration.
