McBroom sponsors legislation for Jacobetti home

LANSING — A resolution sponsored by state Sen. Ed McBroom is calling on the federal Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) to approve a variance, or exemption, for the D.J. Jacobetti Home for Veterans.

“The Jacobetti home provides excellent medical, nursing and domiciliary care and is more than capable of serving veterans who are eligible for Medicare and Medicaid,” said McBroom, R-Vulcan. “Unfortunately, bureaucratic rules are standing in the way of some of the military veterans living at the home from receiving Medicare and Medicaid benefits simply because of the type of bathrooms in the facility. I strongly urge CMS to approve the requested variance.”

CMS requires skilled nursing facilities, like Jacobetti, to equip each resident room with its own bathroom. Currently, 105 of the 186 beds at the facility, all occupied by males, do not meet CMS certification requirements because they offer bathroom facilities shared by two residents.

CMS must approve a variance, or exemption, from federal regulations to provide shared bathrooms. An approved variance would potentially allow more veterans eligible for Medicare or Medicaid benefits to seek placement at the home.

“The Jacobetti home is highly regarded already,” McBroom said. “Veterans desiring to live there should not be financially hindered by a rule on sharing a bathroom when they already know and accept that reality.”

Located in Marquette, the Jacobetti home provides medical, nursing and domiciliary care services for its veteran members. For more information about the home, visit https://www.michiganveterans.com/p/D-J-Jacobetti-Home-for-Veterans.

Senate Concurrent Resolution 11 was approved by the Senate Committee on Families, Seniors, and Veterans and sent to the full Senate for review.
