ESCANABA — Since it was established, the Delta County Cancer Alliance (DCCA) has worked to provide the county’s cancer patients with the financial and emotional assistance they need.

Cheri Severinsen, president of the DCCA’s board of directors, said the alliance was created in 1995. According to her, the DCCA’s mission is to help all cancer patients in the area.

“We only help people in Delta County,” she said.

Assistance provided to local cancer patients by the DCCA includes monetary payments, which help recipients cover transportation to treatment centers, prescriptions, and medical supplies. Severinsen meets with patients and their families to provide them with counseling and emotional support, as well.

The DCCA also operates a loan closet. This closet includes equipment and supplies such as wheelchairs, commodes, shower chairs, bedside tables, walkers, Depends, wigs, and Ensure and bars for mastectomy patients.

In 2016, Severinsen said the alliance reached a major milestone.

“We have hit a million dollars that we have given back to Delta County,” she said.

The DCCA has three major fundraisers each year — a mail campaign with the Daily Press, Golfing for Cancer at the Escanaba Country Club, and the Survivor Walk at Ludington Park.

People can support the DCCA by participating in these fundraisers, Severinsen said. They can also make direct donations to the alliance or volunteer with them.

“We can always use volunteers,” Severinsen said.
