Schoolcraft Transit Authority gets grant

MANISTIQUE — Schoolcraft Memorial Hospital presented a $10,000 grant to Schoolcraft County Transit Authority recently. The community health needs assessment conducted in 2016 concluded that transportation was a barrier for many individuals in our community. In the past, Schoolcraft Memorial Hospital has covered one-way transportation for individuals visiting the hospital.

“Schoolcraft Memorial Hospital has a long-standing relationship with Schoolcraft County Transit Authority providing free/reduced fare transportation for medical appointments. We are pleased to provide this grant which will provide the Transit Authority with funds to expand this program to assist our most vulnerable neighbors”, said Boyd Chappell, CFO, COO.

The new grant has been expanded to include two-way transportation for medical appointments including hospital visits, medical specialists, mental health/counseling appointments and addiction services in Schoolcraft and Delta counties. Rides should be scheduled in advance to ensure on-time arrival for appointments. The grant can also be used to cover the delivery fees associated with the Feeding America Food Truck distribution program. “Better access to non-emergency medical transportation is one of our biggest needs locally. We are very pleased to expand our partnership with Schoolcraft Memorial Hospital to provide rides to the people that need them the most,” said John Stapleton, director at Schoolcraft County Transit Authority.

“Giving back to the community is central to our mission and vision at Schoolcraft Memorial Hospital,” said Bob Crumb, CEO. “It is our hope that free transportation for important medical and mental health related appointments will lessen the financial burden on our residents and increase access to screening and treatment. Schoolcraft and Delta counties offer great care options and we want our community to put their health first. We hope this grant serves our community well.”

Pick up and drop off points must be affiliated with the medical appointment. No special ticket is required but rides should be scheduled in advance by calling 906-341-2111. When booking the transit rides, riders can request grant funds to cover their cost.
