Bay students honored at conference

ESCANABA — Bay College’s Escanaba campus announce two of its students, Hannah Dementer and Carah Moreno were recently honored and awarded scholarships at the Michigan College Access Programs and Personnel (MI-CAPP) Student Leadership Summit in Ann Arbor on Feb. 16. Dementer and Moreno’s applications were scored against applications from TRIO students in programs across the state of Michigan in the highly competitive contest. Both Dementer and Moreno were each awarded a $1,000 scholarship from MI-CAPP’s Endowment Fund in the Student Support Services Academic Achievement Awards category. Additionally, Dementer was the highest scoring TRIO student in the state of Michigan and will compete for an additional regional scholarship this spring from the Educational Opportunity Association. Dementer is graduating with her Early Childhood Education associate’s degree in the spring of 2019 and will continue on to her bachelor’s in Early Childhood Education through Lake Superior State University.

Moreno graduated with her law enforcement associate’s in December of 2018, and will receive an additional associate’s degree in Human Services this spring, with plans to pursue her bachelor’s degree in Forensic Biochemistry at Northern Michigan University in the fall. Both students plan to pay it forward and give back to first generation, low income populations in their future careers.

Bay College sent a delegation of seven students, including Dementer and Moreno, to the MI-CAPP Student Leadership Summit. All of the students who attended are TRiO Student Support Services students, who receive mentoring on campus because of their first generation or low income status. At the summit, students were able to attend workshops given by professionals, as well as peers, to help hone their leadership skills and brainstorm ideas to further utilize these skills back on their own campuses. Students were also given the opportunity to tour Eastern Michigan University and University of Michigan. Students left the conference with a better view of their potential on campus and in society.
