Bay College students win writing honors

ESCANABA — Each year, Bay College and all of Michigan’s community colleges participate in the Liberal Arts Network for Development (LAND) Writing Competition. During the fall semester, any current Bay College student was eligible to submit up to three entries in each of three categories: essay, fiction, and poetry. The top two entries in each category will advance to the state competition.

The following winning essays, stories, and poems were chosen as the Bay College winners and will now compete at the state level:

In the essay category, first place was awarded to Jamie Dove for “A Permanent Solution for a Temporary Problem.” The second-place prize went to Grace Kraniak for her essay “Any Less a Life.”

In the fiction category, Grace Kraniak won again, this time taking first place for her story “Temporary.” The second-place award went to Robert Pirkola for “Henry.”

Sophie Wessel’s “The Illegals” took first place in the poetry category, with second place being awarded to Madaline Horchner for her poem “Her.”

The winning entries will also be published this spring in Serendipity, Bay College’s annual literary and art magazine.
