Non-motorized trails group plans events

ESCANABA — The Delta County Non-Motorized Trails (DCNT) organization has officially been granted its tax exempt status recognizing the newly-formed group as a 501c3 non-profit organization. In addition to ongoing operational and organization efforts that have occurred during its first year, the group has a number of upcoming activities scheduled in the coming weeks and is encouraging the community to participate in any way possible.

The group’s first upcoming event will be an official ribbon cutting ceremony for the Little Bay de Noc Trailhead on Tuesday, Oct. 16 at 5 p.m. The event will take place at the trailhead located near the parking lot for Kids Kingdom playground.

Following the ceremony a public meeting will be held at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 16 at the Freshwater Tavern. The community is encouraged to come and hear updates on DCNT’s progress on its project list as well as learn about upcoming opportunities and priorities.

The group has also scheduled two trail work bees. The first will be held on Saturday, Oct. 20, at 9 a.m. at the Days River Pathway. With the other taking place on Saturday, Oct. 27, at 9 a.m. at the Rapid River Trails, located off of U.S. 41. Volunteers are needed and encouraged to bring tools (with names labeled on them).

The family-friendly Halloween Hustle Trail Race will take place at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 3 at the Days River Pathway. Participants can choose from the Frightening 5k or kid’s Monster Mile run. Events are open to runners and walkers. Proceeds from the race will go toward trail building and maintenance.
