K-9 unit joins Manistique Public Safety Department

MANISTIQUE — On Sept. 28, Manistique Public Safety K-9 Officer Craig Jankowski and Public Safety K-9 Narco graduated from the Northern Michigan K-9 Training Academy in Harrison, Mich., after attending one full month of joint K-9 training.

K-9 Narco is a male German shepherd, 15 months old and was born in Holland and received initial training in Mexico before being imported to the United States.

Both K-9 officers received training in narcotics detection, search and rescue, tracking, handler protection, suspect apprehension and will also be available for school and public education opportunities.

A total of $25,640 has been raised to date to fund this program, all coming from donations from public businesses, public entities, and private citizens.

K-9 Officers Jankowski and K-9 Narco are now on duty in Manistique and are on patrol in the city and Schoolcraft County.
