ESCANABA — Leigh’s Garden Winery has officially entered its next generation of ownership after a key-passing and ribbon-cutting ceremony. The winery’s current and former owners — along with family members, customers, and members of local business organizations — participated in this event, held on Saturday, Oct. 23.

Leigh Schmidt, who originally co-owned the business along with his wife Connie, established Leigh’s Garden in 2008. The Ludington Street building that houses the winery dates back to 1884.

“I’ve been working here for about five years, so when Leigh decided to sell the winery in January of this year. I knew I didn’t want this place gone or sold to somebody else,” new co-owner Julie Lambert said.

Julie and her husband Tony took ownership of Leigh’s Garden on Aug. 20. Tony is a lifelong resident of the area with a long history in the world of business — among other companies, he co-owns VanAire, an engineering and manufacturing company employing 75 plus people, in Gladstone.

“Leigh really did a great job over the last 12 years to lay a foundation for us to build upon. He has built a reputable name in the community for great wine and a great atmosphere,” Tony said.

In the future, Julie and Tony plan to expand the wine offerings available at Leigh’s Garden. They also aim to begin serving appetizers, host live music more often, and make other enhancements to the business.

“I feel really good about the transition, and I’m looking forward to seeing how they take this to the next level,” Leigh said.

Meanwhile, Connie said she is glad that the business Leigh built remains in good hands.

“It’s bittersweet because it was my husband’s passion, but we know we can come down here any time we want. His dream came true, and we love the new owners,” she said.

Vickie Micheau, executive director of the Delta County Chamber of Commerce, commented during the ribbon cutting celebration that Connie and Leigh achieved the American dream of opening and building up a successful business and then selling it to individuals that share their passion and entrepreneurial spirit. “We wish Julie and Tony a future of happiness and fulfillment with their exciting new business venture,” said Micheau.

Leigh’s Garden Winery has served locally made wine to Escanaba residents and visitors since 2008. Founded by Leigh Schmidt, the winery is located at 904 Ludington St. – a building where Escanaba businesses have operated since 1884.
