ESCANABA — While the first day of autumn is officially Wednesday, September 22, it is already starting to feel like the calendar is starting to change. Schools are in session, the U.P. State Fair has concluded an excellent week, high school and college football teams have started their season, there are even Halloween displays in our stores. But the first sure sign for me is the start of the NFL season and the first real game for my favorite team, the Green Bay Packers. There is nothing better than to get with friends and watch the game together. It is still fun, even if you sprinkle in a few Bear, Viking or Lion fans. The look of panic on their face as they wait for their team to make that critical mistake that will end the game as a Packer victory. I know I am supposed to write about economic impact, but keep in mind all of those snacks, soft drinks and adult beverages help out our local businesses.

Another way to help out our local businesses or help pay for those snacks is to attend the next two career fairs at the Delta County Chamber Commerce Center on September 22 and 29. Both of the career fairs are from 3 to 6 p.m. and will give you an opportunity to talk to many businesses all in one place. The manufacturing businesses will be at the career fair on the 22nd and hospitality/retail and any other businesses that have not previously attended will join the 29th fair. Our local business are looking for your support to expand operations, extend hours of operation or bring their business back to normal conditions. Upper Peninsula Michigan Works is the presenting sponsor for the career fairs. They will also help you with work on a resume or any questions you might have. They are available at 906-280-8022. September will also have two Business After Hours. September 15 will be at Terrace Bay Hotel and will include cosponsors The Radio Results Network and TV3. The other BAH session will be on September 29 at the Peninsula Federal Credit Union. Hours for Business After Hours is from 5 to 7 p.m. They are great opportunities to meet new business contacts or reconnect with business associates you have not seen in person for a while. Food, beverages and prize chances are always fun.

If you have not had the chance to stop by the U.P. State Fairgrounds to check out the Great Lakes Logging & Heavy Equipment Expo, today will be your last chance. The event will be open today from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. The event started Thursday afternoon and had a full day on Friday as well. It is the organization’s 75th anniversary expo and is bigger and better than ever. We are very proud the Great Lakes Timber Professionals Association picked Escanaba and Delta County for this special year.

Congratulations to the UP State Fair Authority and those who helped out with this year’s fair. What a great week, wonderful weather and I know everyone enjoyed the festivities.
