Column: Have you made any changes for 2021?

ESCANABA — While I have learned a lot in 2020, I have really put it in the review mirror. The last painful remnant would have the be the Packers losing in the NFC Championship game. I know it was played in 2021, but it was still part of the 2020 season.

I have been focusing on things I can do to be a better person. I have started walking everyday to relieve some of the stress we all feel. I make sure I tell my family, friends and coworkers how much I appreciate them and all of the things they do to make my life more special. I am looking to remain as positive as possible when there are obstacles thrown in my way. I am making sure I continue to be optimistic about the future and what it can be for all of us!

Starting February 1 our restaurants and taverns will be able to re-open with restrictions. The starting point is 25% capacity and a 10 p.m. curfew. It will be a great time to make sure we visit them the first day they are open and if we can’t spend time, make sure we get take out or buy a gift certificate to let them know how much we value their business. Based on the trends of the COVID-19 infections in the UP, I am very optimistic that we will see the restrictions loosen further before the end of February. There are some stimulus programs that will help in the future, but nothing helps more than our patronage. It will also be up to us to remain smart and safe as we move forward to continue to keep the trend coming down. Delta County and our Health providers have done a great job starting the vaccination process. I am looking forward when it is my turn in the pecking order, my attempt at a joke.

As we move into February my thoughts will move to spring. I will be day dreaming about baseball, golf and time spent outside. We have all done a great job staying home and avoiding bigger crowds, but the reward for our work will be coming, allowing us to have events. Some of the biggest disappointments for me last year was being unable to participate in charity events. They mean so much to the sponsoring charity, are fun and help out local businesses. I miss the networking with friends and businesses associates at such events. The people that live in our communities are always giving and supportive to charitable events. The generosity and pride of Delta County is unmatched! We will also start hearing planning for larger events, parades, festivals, fireworks and the U.P. State Fair. We will have a lot to look forward to and be thankful for as we move forward.

I want to wish my partners at the Delta County Chamber of Commerce congratulations on their centennial year. What an amazing accomplishment for the organization. I know they are positioned to be leaders in our area for the next 100 years as well. Stay safe.
