Column: U.P. history conference to be held locally

ESCANABA — I always love this time of year! Family and friends get together and share stories about the past. I remember how much I enjoyed going to my grandparent’s farm and talking with them about what it was like growing up. Those stories really kindled my interest in history about our family and what it was like living in the past.

Few places have as rich of a history as the Upper Peninsula, Delta County and the city of Escanaba. The Upper Peninsula History Conference will be held in Escanaba June 28 – 30, 2019. The Delta County Historical Society is the host sponsor for the event planned by the Historical Society of Michigan. The key note speakers and breakout sessions will be held at Bay College. The conference will include some tours of area land marks for the 200 to 300 attendees of the event. Many of the attendees will be from the Lower Peninsula visiting the area for the event.

The Delta County Chamber of Commerce and the Escanaba Downtown Development Authority are also core sponsors for the conference. The Chamber has sent out information to local businesses about how they can help support this event. If you have any questions regarding how to become a sponsor for the event contact the Delta County Chamber of Commerce with any questions.

The conference will bring many visitors to the area to learn about the beautiful part of the state we call home. Many of the visitors will plan return trips to the Upper Peninsula to learn more about the topics the have learned about at the conference. The weekend will also have a picnic at the Escanaba Market Place with entertainment for the attendees.

The Upper Peninsula History Conference is a great opportunity to show off the area and how special it is. Thanks in advance for your support for the conference as a sponsor or as a participant.
