Laurel Premo Trio to perform at folk dance series

Laurel Premo

AMASA, Mich. — On Sunday, Dec. 8, the Crystal Theatre and Second Sunday Folk Dance series collectively present the Laurel Premo Trio in concert at the Crystal Theatre in Crystal Falls, Mich. The event starts at 4 p.m. CT and will begin with an opening set by White Water — including fiddler/step-dancer Carrie Dlutkowski. The Laurel Premo Trio will follow immediately and perform pieces from its CD recording, “The Iron Trios.”

A reception to greet the musicians will be held after the concert in the Stage Left lounge of the theatre.

Iron County native Laurel Premo is known for her compelling delivery of roots music on fiddle, banjo, guitar, and vocals. She has been writing, arranging, and touring since 2009 with vocal and instrumental roots acts, and is internationally known from her duo Red Tail Ring. The Laurel Premo Trio dives deeply into both traditional and new fiddle music. At the Crystal Theatre concert, Premo’s fiddling will be complemented by blues guitarist Shari Kane and double bassist Jacob Warren.

John Sinkevics of Local Spins called The Iron Trios “A superb and sublime collection of instrumental grace. The Iron Trios … marks Premo’s second major instrumental release. Her arrangements create a new musical landscape by combining walking-paced traditional fiddle repertoire with finger-style electric and acoustic guitar and double bass. The rhythms and intonation choices connect back to banjo and old blues roots in American music.”

All Second Sunday Folk Dance events begin promptly at 4 p.m. CT and end at 7 p.m. CT. Admission is “come as you are and pay what you can” with a donation at the door. The line-up of guest musicians for the remainder of the 35th season includes Mark Dvorak (Jan. 12), Brian Miller and Nora Rendell (Feb. 9), Stas Vanglevski and Misha Litvin (March 8), and May Erlewine (April 5. Note, this is the first Sunday of April). A full season schedule is available at www.secondsundayfolkdance.com. If you would like to sponsor the SSFD with a tax-deductible donation, contact Bette Premo at 906-822-7889.
