Episcopal Diocese to hold 127th convention

ESCANABA — The 127th Convention of the Episcopal Diocese of Northern Michigan will gather at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church in Escanaba on Saturday, Sept. 28 beginning with worship at 10 a.m. The Rt. Rev. Rayford J. Ray will preside at the service and The Rev. Shane Spellmeier will be the preacher at the service. The Rt. Rev. Rayford Ray is the 11th bishop of the diocese. The Rev. Shane Spellmeier is a priest in partnership with Trinity Church in Houghton, Mich.

The convention will organize at 11 a.m. with opening remarks by Bishop Ray and members of the diocese. Elections taking place will include the Standing Committee, Diocesan Council, Trust Association, and General Convention. The convention will hear about the presiding bishop’s initiative of “The Way of Love.” The diocese will also hear from Rick Stanitus on the work of Canterbury House at Michigan Tech University in Houghton; Lanni Lantto on Wild Church sponsored by the Episcopal Church and the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA); “Welcome, Invite Connect” by Rev. Canon Lydia Kelsey Bucklin; and Debbie Nedeau and Kathy Vandan Boogard from the Great Lakes Peace Center of Rapid River.

The Episcopal Presiding Bishop Primate Michael Curry will join Michiganers at NMU on Sunday, Oct. 13 to hear from the Most Rev. Michael Curry as he preaches at the 5 p.m. eastern service. Curry is known as the “Royal Preacher,” as he preached at the most recent wedding of the royal family in England.
