Memorial Day military ceremonies planned

ESCANABA — The Delta County Veteran Council will be holding Memorial Day ceremonies on May 27 at area cemeteries and monuments.

Ceremonies will take place at Holy Cross at 9 a.m., Lakeview cemetery at 9:30 a.m., and at the Ludington Park Veterans monument at 10 a.m. The laying of the wreath for the soldiers and sailors lost at sea ceremony, presented by the Ladies auxiliary of Marine corps league #444, will also take place at Ludington Park.

At 11 a.m., the Veteran Council will travel to Gardens of Rest Ceremony for its military service, honoring the veterans who have passed away since last Memorial Day.

The Garden Of Rest Ceremony will be held outside at 11 a.m. Craig Woerpel will be the master of ceremonies, and Jeffery A. Sierpien, retired USMC and the Delta County Airport manager, will be the speaker. Laura Sliva, Escanaba High School junior, will sing the National Anthem and also play Taps to end the ceremony.

Amvets Post #123 of Escanaba will be performing the rifle salute at all the ceremonies.

Garden Art Gallery to hold open house

GARDEN — The Garden Art Gallery will once again open its door to visitors with an open house from 5 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, May 23 on Main Street in Garden. The open house is designed as a way to let the public know that the Gallery has re-opened for the season.

The gallery will be offering a $50 gift certificate and door prizes along with free appetizers, drinks and desserts. Inn and Coffee Exchange will be providing customers with roasted coffee. This celebration includes a spaghetti dinner by Nahma Inn Kitchen as a fundraiser for Tri Star, beginning at 4:30 p.m. in the community hall. This is a free will donation meal.

The gallery showroom will be open with a variety of items for sale and many of the more than 50 local artists present. Several new artists will be present.

Croatian Golf Open

GLADSTONE — The 49th Annual Croatian Golf Open 9 hole event will be held on June 30 at the Irish Oaks Golf Course. Check in starts at noon and golfing starts at 1 p.m. There is a cost for the golfing and meal.

The event is open to all persons of Croatian descent and their families. At least one member of the family must be of Croatian descent. Croatian chicken and povitica along with other menu items will be served.

Benefit for David Johnsen set for today

ESCANABA –A Benefit will be held Saturday May 11 at the Elk’s Lodge 501 Ludington St. Escanaba, from 3 to 7 p.m. for David Johnsen, who is battling small cell renal cancer. There will be food, bucket raffles, silent auction, 50/50 drawings and a bake sale.

Toastmasters to meet Wednesday in Esky

ESCANABA — Bay De Noc Toastmasters develops communication and leadership skills every Wednesday, except the last Wednesday of the month, at noon in the Penstar Building, located at 1431 N. 26th St. in Escanaba.

Taco Tuesday at American Legion

GLADSTONE — The American Legion Post 71, located at 802 Delta Avenue in Gladstone, will be having Taco Tuesday from 4:30 until 6:30 p.m. every Tuesday.

Sit-n-fit exercise class

ESCANABA — Fitness chair exercises to improve strength, stretching, balance, flexibility and muscle will be held every Monday and Friday at 11 a.m. at the Escanaba Senior Center. Sign in at the office. The event is free.
