GFWC Escanaba Woman’s Club meeting

ESCANABA — The January membership meeting of the Escanaba Woman’s Club is on Wednesday, Jan. 16 at noon. The luncheon will be held held at Pacinos and will feature a speaker from the DNR.

St. Thomas Pasty sale

ESCANABA — St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church pasty sale will be held Jan. 14 and 15, from 2 to 5 p.m.

The church is located at 1820 9th Avenue North in Escanaba.

Pasties are available with or without rutabaga. To place an order, call 786-7053.

Dance in Rock

ROCK — A dance will be held at the Rock Community/Senior Center, located at 3892 W. Mapleridge Rd, on Sunday, Jan. 13 from 1 to 5 p.m. Music will be provided by Will Kilpela & Kenny.

There is a cost at the door and a free-will donation will be collected for lunch.

All proceeds benefit the Rock Senior Corporation. For more information, call Alice at 356-6588.

Karaoke contest in Nahma Jan. 19

NAHMA — The “3rd Annual Sing Off,” sponsored by the Isabella Community Hall, will take place Saturday, Jan. 19 at the Nahma Inn at 7 p.m.

All singers must be at least 18 years of age and have their own professional karaoke CD+G (compact disc with graphics) with just music and not vocals. Singer registration is payable by 6:30 p.m. that evening.

Rapid River Readers to meet at Jack’s Thursday

RAPID RIVER — The Rapid River Readers will discuss their first novel of 2019, “The Wife Between Us” by Hendricks and Pekkanen, at Jack’s Resturant at 10 a.m., Thursday, Jan. 10.

Delta Kappa Gamma scholarship offered

ESCANABA — The Delta Kappa Gamma Society has announced that it will again award a local high school scholarship to a senior girl planning a career in education. Delta Kappa Gamma is an international organization of women educators who promote the professional and personal growth of women educators.

Delta Kappa Gamma supports and encourage educational excellence and intercultural understanding. The Beta Sigma chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma is composed of Escanaba, Menominee, and Iron Mountain-Kingsford.

Previous local winners of this scholarship were: 2018 – a Bark River student, 2017 – Erica Rubick (Rapid River), 2016 – Mackenzie Leisner (Escanaba), 2015 – Mikaela Jefferson (Escanaba), 2014 – Kristen Leigh Bergstrom (Escanaba), 2013 – Anissa Lynne Godfrey (Gladstone), 2012 – Margaret A. Rose (Escanaba), 2011 – Lauren Kleinman (Escanaba), 2010 – Jordan Dalgord (Rapid River), 2009 – Whitney Veihl (Bark River), and 2008 – Emily Robinson (Bark River).

Senior girls planning a career in education from the Delta Schoolcraft area can learn further details about this scholarship from their high school guidance counselor. Applications are due April 26, 2019. Any questions can be directed to Rose at 786-5674 or Jeanne at 789-0110.
