DAV to hold meeting

ESCANABA — The next scheduled meeting for the DAV Chapter 24 will be held on Monday, Nov. 5 at 7 p.m. at the Military Order of the Purple Heart building, located at 1202 Sheridan Road, Escanaba. All disabled veterans are welcome.

NAMI to meet Oct. 29

MARQUETTE — The National Alliance on Mental Illness-Alger/Marquette offers free, confidential peer support groups and educational meetings for individuals living with mental illness, and friends or families living with an individual with mental illness.

A support group will gather Monday, Oct. 29 at 7 p.m. in the Baraga Place Conference Room, 129 West Baraga Avenue, Marquette. For more information, call 906-360-7107, or visit www.namiam.org.

Homeless Shelter ­volunteer trainings

ESCANABA — New volunteer training sessions for the Hope at the Inn homeless shelter will be held Monday, Oct. 29 at Grace Church, north M-35 Gladstone, room 112, at 7 p.m.; and Sunday, Nov. 4, at All Saints Church, 715 Wisconsin, Gladstone at 11:45 a.m.

Those who trained previously need not attend, but are encouraged to come for a refresher training. Attendees will learn about the shelter concept and specific duties for each shift. The trainings last about 75 minutes. No pre-registration is needed.

HATI will open for its sixth season on Sunday, Nov. 4, at Our Savior Lutheran Church. Volunteers are needed to provide evening meals and staff the shelter shifts each day from 5:30 to 10:30 p.m., 10:30 p.m. to 3 a.m., and 3 a.m. to 8 a.m. The location rotates weekly among 13 churches from November to April.

Christian chalk artist to perform at First UMC

ESCANABA — Rod Snow, chalk artist and ventriloquist, will be presenting a program at First United Methodist Church, located at 302 S. 6th St., Escanaba, on Sunday, Oct. 28, at 6:30 p.m.

Rod is a ventriloquist who brings a Christian message with his music, puppets, and chalk art. The audience watches his pictures take shape as he works, and there is always a hidden figure that is revealed at the end under black light.

First, Central, and Bark River United Methodist Churches are co-sponsoring this family-oriented event. A free will offering will be taken, and a time of fellowship and desserts will follow the program. For more information, contact First UMC at 786-3713.

Library Friends host card and game night

GLADSTONE — The Friends of the Gladstone Library will host their annual fall Card Party and Game Night on Thursday, Nov. 1, from 6:30 to 9 p.m. at the library.

Groups should reserve a table by calling Judy Wyckoff at 428-5263. Other tables will be reserved for individuals who wish to come and join a group for the evening. There will also be a Mahjong table this year.

There will be a silent auction and a pie social. A “Reader’s Basket” will be given away as a door prize.

Bring your own games or round up a group to play bridge. Tickets are can be purchased from Wyckoff, other Friends or at the library. Proceeds go to supplement children’s programs and activities such as the reading programs and story hours.

Taco Tuesday at American Legion

GLADSTONE — The American Legion Post 71, located at 802 Delta Avenue in Gladstone, will be having Taco Tuesday from 4:30 until 6:30 p.m. every Tuesday.
