Escanaba AKtion Club celebrates honorary week with activities, donations

ESCANABA — The AKtion Club of Escanaba celebrated their first annual Kiwanis International’s AKtion Club week March 5 through March 9.

The group started its celebration the week before at the Bonifas Art Center by making sun catchers under the direction of volunteers, Sandy and Bruce, welcoming spring. They also made a donation to the Bonifas Art Center in gratitude for their hosting. AKtion meets 12 times a year.

Discussion of their activities included thanks and congratulations to AKtion members involved in the recent Special Olympics Basketball Tournament and to those who helped bus tables and greet athletes.

The club concluded their celebration by making donations to the YMCA’s annual campaign and to the Mo-Buddy program at the Escanaba High School. Two club members and two advisors visited the program to present the check and to visit with the program advisor, Mrs. Hawes-Aiken, and some students with their Mo-buddies.

This program resonates with some AKtion members who say life would have been much easier for them when they were in school if they’d had a Mo-buddy. Mo-Buddies are people who team up with students who need a little extra help academically, athletically, and socially.
