BARK RIVER — The words “… and they’re off!” will kick off the 143rd running of the Kentucky Derby on May 6 at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Ky. But in case you can’t be there, the next best thing is to join the Heart of the North Lions at their 5th annual Kentucky Derby Party scheduled for Saturday, May 6, at the Highland Golf Club. Derby attire is encouraged, but not required to enjoy the evening. The doors will open at 5 p.m., allowing time to watch the pre-race events on one of several televisions located throughout the clubhouse. There will also be time to look at information about the field of horses competing, poll positions, the jockeys, the owners, who’s favored and the track conditions with the race being run at 6:34 p.m. The winners of the Race Raffle will be drawn immediately after the race.

In addition to viewing of the race, included in the $25 advance ticket

price ($35 at the door) are a mint julep, hor d’oeuvres, dinner (prepared by Award Winning Shane Larson Southern BBQ), desserts, music (provided by Taylored Weddings and Events) and dancing until 10 p.m. Throughout the evening, there will be opportunities to participate in raffles and a silent auction. Limited seating is available.

Advance tickets can be purchased in Bark River, from Massie’s County Market, Northern Michigan National Bank, Northern Sun Winery, or from any Heart of the North Lions Club member. In Escanaba, tickets can be purchesed at Positively! or Heynssens Selins Furniture. Proceeds from this event are designated for Bay Cliff Health Camp and other U.P. Lions projects.
