community event

GLADSTONE – Grace Church is again hosting its Back 2 School Bash on Sunday, July 31, from noon until 3 p.m. at Van Cleve Park.

Food and games are on tap, and backpacks filled with school supplies will be distributed to children attending the event.

Old World Christmas

seeks crafters

MENOMINEE – Organizers of Menominee’s Old World Christmas market are seeking artisans who hand produce merchandise traditionally found at Europe’s Christmas markets.

The market is looking for makers of hand-carved German nutcrackers and incense burners, Swedish dala horses and felt ornaments, Ukrainian decorated eggs (pysanky), Russian nesting dolls, Scandinavian straw ornaments, Delft ornaments from Holland, or other items from the Old World or other parts of the globe.

A project of the Menominee County Farm & Food exchange, which also hosts a Saturday farm market, the Christmas market is in its third year. In 2015, the event drew 1,200 shoppers.

This year, the Christmas market is set for Saturday, Dec. 3, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the VFW, 3937 10th St. /Highway 41, on the north side of Menominee.

Applications for the Christmas market are now available.

Youth shooting program

ESCANABA – This summer’s youth shooting program through the Great Lakes Sports and Recreation Club, 211 19th Ave. N., takes place on Saturday, July 30. Registration starts at 8:30 a.m., and there is a mandatory safety briefing at 9 a.m.

All programs are free, and lunch is provided. Everyone shooting is one-on-one with a certified instructor. Youth 5- through 18-years-old must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Time permitting, participants can experience shooting archery, 22 rifles, and 20-gauge or 12-gauge shotguns.

Blacksmith works

at Heritage Crafts Day

MENOMINEE – The rich history of 19th and 20th century will come alive on Sunday, July 31, from 1 to 4 p.m. (CDT) at West Shore Fishing Museum. Heritage Crafts Day will showcase artisans and volunteers demonstrating skills and practices of bygone eras, including blacksmith George Potvin of 10 Mile Creek Forge in Bark River. Curt Williams will display a 1931 Model A snowmobile used for ice fishing. Area wood carvers will demonstrate and sell hand carved items. In the boat display area, Lewis Palm will mend fishing nets.

Shirley Pisani of Riverstone Healing Arts will make organic lotions and balms and sell handmade soap. Tim and Faye Presley, Skandia, will demonstrate old-fashioned sauerkraut preparation. Susan Bork and friends will spin wool yarn; Marlene Williams and Judy Neal will crochet, and Eileen Behrend will churn butter.

Kathy Coppock will help visitors create unique garden art from vintage dishes. For $10, participants will have access to all elements needed to make and take home a unique garden decoration. Perennial plants from the museum gardens are for sale, and the Welcome Center Gift Shop offers many vintage treasures.

This event and the West Shore Fishing Museum celebrate life on Green Bay waters in the 19th and 20th centuries, focusing on commercial fishing, a major industry in the region. The restored Bailey home, exhibit buildings, commercial fishing boat displays, gardens, and nature trails provide a pleasant and relaxing step back into local history. Light refreshments will be available.

The museum operates on donations; there is no admission or parking charge.

It is located off Highway M-35 at Bailey Park, 15 miles north of Menominee or 7 miles south of Cedar River. Drive into Bailey Park to enter the museum grounds.

AAUW gathers at

Heritage Center

HANNAHVILLE- On Thursday, Aug. 11, the Hannahville Indian Community will host the Escanaba Area Branch of American Association of University Women (AAUW). AAUW members and their guests will gather at 11 a.m. at Hannahville’s Heritage Center to explore and learn about Native American culture. Earl Meshigaud, director of Potawatomi culture, language and history will begin the day with a special presentation.

The group will then tour the Heritage Center, which houses many artifacts. A traditional Native American themed lunch will be prepared by Vicki Dowd, cultural leader. She will also share selected Native American women’s teachings.

Carol Bergquist is in charge of arrangements. The event is open to AAUW members, their guests and interested others. Reservations are required and may be made by calling 786-3415 no later than Saturday, Aug. 6.

Mobile food pantries

stops in Rapid River

ESCANABA – This July, Feeding America West Michigan will send mobile food pantries to communities in the Upper Peninsula. The distributions will provide 87,500 pounds of food, or 73,000 meals, to people in need.

On Wednesday, July 27, the pantry will be at the Rapid River High School, 10070 Highway 2, at 10 a.m.

While no proof of income is required at the distributions, clients will be asked to sign a statement affirming that they are in need.

In order to help people in need find mobile pantries more easily, Feeding America West Michigan unveiled a public Mobile Pantry calendar on its website at the beginning of June. The calendar lists distribution dates and locations for the Upper Peninsula and the western third of the Lower Peninsula.

Church packs shoe

boxes for needy children

GLADSTONE – The Summer Mission Project will pack shoe boxes on Sunday, Aug. 7, at 4 p.m. at Grace Church in Gladstone.

Start collecting items and bring these things to Grace Church, 528 28th St., from Aug. 1 to 5, and then join them for the packing party to fill shoe boxes.

The group is hoping to pack 1,300 shoe boxes. Suggested items for inclusion are bars of unscented soap, wrapped in a new washcloth in a ziplock plastic bag; small stuffed toys with all tags cut off, including the butt tags but no pigs; small note pads with some pencils, sharpener, erasers, etc. in a ziplock plastic bag; boxes of crayons; combs, hairbrushes, hair-ties; toothbrushes but no toothpaste; flip-flops in a variety of sizes; pairs of underwear including plain t-shirts for boys and girls; and extra items for fillers. No items with religious symbols, candy, glass, or any liquids can be included.

The cost to ship the shoe boxes is $7 each.

Shoe boxes are brought to the children in refugee camps by pastors and missionaries working there, along side Samaritan’s Purse and other ministry volunteers.

Lighthouse and Museum

ESCANABA – The Sand Point Lighthouse and the Delta County Historical Museum are open every day during the summer from Memorial Day through Labor Day from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The admission charge of $3 for adults, $1 for children, and $5 for families admits visitors to both buildings. The lighthouse and museum are located on Sand Point, Ludington Park, Escanaba.

In addition, the Delta County Historical Society Archives will be open to the public during the summer (Memorial Day to Labor Day). Hours are 1 to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday, except when national holidays occur on weekdays. The Archives is located in the Dr. John Beaumier Historical Building along with the museum. There is no charge to use the Archives though donations are always welcome.

The Michigan Activity Pass program is a component of MI Big Green Gym, a partnership between Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan, MRPA and the DNR that encourages Michigan residents to use the state’s parks and recreation facilities to increase physical activity. picnic Aug. 6

ESCANABA – In an effort to bring foster, adoptive, and kinship parents together in Delta County, The Delta County Foster, Adoptive, and Kinship Association has been launched. The association is having a picnic on Saturday, Aug. 6, at the Besse Park from noon to 5 p.m.

The group meets the second Tuesday of every month to provide support, training, activities and fundraising for local foster and adoptive parents.

Membership is open to the public, and one is not required to be a foster, adoptive or kinship parent. The only requirement is a passion for helping families and children in the area.

Youth have opportunity

to try shooting

ESCANABA – This summer’s youth shooting program through the Great Lakes Sports and Recreation Club, 211 19th Ave. N., takes place on Saturday, July 23, and July 30. Registration starts at 8:30 a.m., and there is a mandatory safety briefing at 9 a.m.

All programs are free, and lunch is provided. Everyone shooting is one-on-one with a certified instructor. Youth 5- through 18-years-old must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Time permitting, participants can experience shooting archery, 22 rifles, and 20 gauge or 12 gauge shotguns.

NAHMA The Nahma Township Historical Society will host its 12th annual Senior Recognition Tea at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 6, at the Isabella Grange Hall. This event pays tribute to seniors who are at least 80 years of age who were born/raised in Nahma township or are currently residing there.

The program will include individual memory accounts of life in Nahma township (Nahma, Isabella and St. Jacques).

Mobile food pantry

makes local stops

ESCANABA – This July, Feeding America West Michigan will send mobile food pantries to communities in the Upper Peninsula. The distributions will provide 87,500 pounds of food, or 73,000 meals, to people in need.

Local stops are on Wednesday, July 20, at Webster Elementary, 1213 N 19th St., Escanaba, at 1:30 p.m.; and on Wednesday, July 27, at Rapid River High School, 10070 Highway 2, at 10 a.m.

While no proof of income is required at the distributions, clients will be asked to sign a statement affirming that they are in need.

In order to help people in need find mobile pantries more easily, Feeding America West Michigan unveiled a public Mobile Pantry calendar on its website at the beginning of June. The calendar lists distribution dates and locations for the Upper Peninsula and the western third of the Lower Peninsula.

Old World Christmas

market seeks crafters

MENOMINEE – Organizers of Menominee’s Old World Christmas market are seeking artisans who hand produce merchandise traditionally found at Europe’s Christmas markets.

The market is looking for makers of hand-carved German nutcrackers and incense burners, Swedish dala horses and felt ornaments, Ukrainian decorated eggs (pysanky), Russian nesting dolls, Scandinavian straw ornaments, Delft ornaments from Holland, or other items from the Old World or other parts of the globe.

A project of the Menominee County Farm & Food exchange, which also hosts a Saturday farm market, the Christmas market is in its third year. In 2015, the event drew 1,200 shoppers.

This year, the Christmas market is set for Saturday, Dec. 3, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the VFW, 3937 10th St. /Highway 41, on the north side of Menominee.

Applications for the Christmas market will be available July 22.

ESCANABA – The Escanaba Senior Center is sponsoring a bus for all ages to Marquette on Saturday, July 30. The trip will include stops at Mattson Lower Harbor Park to visit Art in the Park, and Picnic Rocks park to visit the Outback Craft show, then proceed to shopping.

Ride pickups begin at 8 a.m. at various locations and will return to Escanaba at approximately 3:30 p.m.

Cost is $10 per person prepaid with lunch on your own. Limited seating is available, and the bus is handicapped accessible. Assistance aides are required to pay the rider fee as well.

Old greeting cards are in need. The pictures on the cards will be used to make notepads, bookmarks, and daily place mats. ESCANABA – A benefit dinner, along with games and raffles, is taking place at the Mead Rod and Gun Club for Delaney Wahl, 15, who has been diagnosed with EHE cancer (epithelioid hemangioendothelioma).

The benefit will take place from 2 to 9 p.m. Sunday, July 17, with proceeds going toward research of EHE, a rare and sometimes fatal vascular sarcoma that affects adolescents and young adults for which there is no cure or established treatment. Fewer than 300 individuals from around the world have been diagnosed with EHE.

“A Day Out for EHE Research and Team Laney” will include food, refreshments, bucket raffles, 50/50 raffles, carnival games, and a bonfire.

Stamp and Coin Club

hosts event

ESCANABA – The Bay de Noc Stamp and Coin Club will be holding its 16th annual stamp and coin bourse on Saturday, July 16. The show hours are 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. This year’s event will be held in the M-Tec building at Bay College.

Stamp and coin dealers from Michigan and Wisconsin will be on hand to sell and buy stamps and coins. Individuals who wish to participate may also do so for a fee of $10, which is used to offset the cost of lunch.

The Bay de Noc Stamp and Coin Club is a nonprofit organization that meets on the second Monday of each month at Bay College. Meeting times for this summer are at 5:30 p.m. in the Heirman Building. Fall, winter, and spring meetings are held at 6:30 p.m.

HERMANSVILLE – The Menominee County Voiture 1288 of the 40 et 8 held its regular promenade at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Allan Lanaville in Nadeau.

The promenade was conducted by Chef de Gars Marcel Charters of Stephenson.

It was announced at the promenade that the Menominee Voiture made its membership goals for 2016, having 26 paid members. It also was announced that five students are going to nurses’ training schools as part of the scholarship program.

The next promenade of the Voiture will be at the Carney-Nadeau American Legion Post on Tuesday, July 19, at 7 p.m.

Delaney Wahl

ESCANABA – A benefit dinner, along with games and raffles, is taking place at the Mead Rod and Gun Club on Sunday for Delaney Wahl, 15, who has been diagnosed with EHE cancer (epithelioid hemangioendothelioma).

The benefit will take place from 2 to 9 p.m. Sunday, July 17, with proceeds going towards research of EHE, a rare and sometimes fatal vascular sarcoma that affects adolescents and young adults for which there is no cure or established treatment. Less than 300 individuals from around the world have been diagnosed with EHE.

“A Day Out for EHE Research and Team Laney” will include food, refreshments, bucket raffles, 50/50 raffles, carnival games, and a bonfire.

Mobile food pantries

MANISTIQUE – This July, Feeding America West Michigan will send mobile food pantries to communities in the Upper Peninsula. The distributions will provide 87,500 pounds of food, or 73,000 meals, to people in need.

Local stops are on Thursday, July 14, at the Hannahville Community Center, N 14911 Hannahville B-1 Road, at 10 a.m.; on Wednesday, July 20, at Webster Elementary, 1213 N 19th St., Escanaba, at 1:30 p.m.; and on Wednesday, July 27, at Rapid River High School, 10070 Highway 2, at 10 a.m.

While no proof of income is required at the distributions, clients will be asked to sign a statement affirming that they are in need.

In order to help people in need find mobile pantries more easily, Feeding America West Michigan unveiled a public Mobile Pantry calendar on its website at the beginning of June. The calendar lists distribution dates and locations for the Upper Peninsula and the western third of the Lower Peninsula.

ESCANABA – This summer’s youth shooting program through the Great Lakes Sports and Recreation Club, 5211 19th Ave. N., takes place Saturday, July 9. Registration starts at 8:30 a.m., and there is a mandatory safety briefing at 9 a.m.

RAPID RIVER – A benefit dinner for James Deneau, who recently suffered a heart attack and was diagnosed with lung cancer, is planned for Saturday, July 9, at the American Legion in Rapid River. ESCANABA – Breast and Cervical Cancer Control Program and the Women’s Health Clinic offers screenings for women. The Public Health, Delta & Menominee Counties now has appointments available to women in need of breast and pelvic exams, Pap test, and mammograms.

BCCCP Screening services are free of charge through the Breast and Cervical Cancer Control Program. Women must be ages 40-64, meet income guidelines, and have no health insurance or are underinsured.

WISEWOMAN services include screening for cholesterol, blood pressure, & glucose. Lifestyle counseling is also available.

The Women’s Health Clinic also offers these services for clients age 40 to 64. The patient’ insurance or Medicaid will be billed.

HERMANSVILLE – The Hermansville Independence Day Celebration will be on Sunday, July 3, from 11:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.

The parade starts at 11:30. The line-up and registration for floats begins at 10 on Earle Drive.

In addition to the parade and its prizes, food, games, a classic car show, mud runs and music are planned during the event. Both museums also will be open. Fireworks will be at dusk.

Voters seeks donations

ESCANABA – The Delta County League of Women Voters is looking for donations of books, audio books, DVDs and music CDs to be sold at its annual book sale in August.

Funds from the annual sale are used to publish voter guides and for other voter services.

Donated materials should be no more than 10 years old and in good condition. They can be delivered to Pat Rudden at Northern Michigan Bank & Trust, 1921 3rd Ave N , or call her at 280-1789 for pick up.

Youth offered lessons

on shooting

ESCANABA – This summer’s youth shooting program through the Great Lakes Sports and Recreation Club takes place on several Saturdays: July 9, July 16, July 23 and July 30. It includes a mandatory safety briefing starting at 9 a.m.

All programs are free, and lunch is provided. Everyone shooting is one-on-one with a certified instructor. Youth 5- through 18-years-old must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Time permitting, participants can experience shooting archery, 22 rifles, and 20 gauge or 12 gauge shotguns.

monthly meeting

HERMANSVILLE – The IXL Historical Museum’s next monthly meeting is on Wednesday, July 13, at 3:30 p.m. at the museum. The public is encouraged to attend.

Legion installs officers

ESCANABA – The Cloverland American Legion Post 82 will meet on Tuesday, July 5, at 6:30 p.m. at the Purple Heart Building, 1202 Sheridan Road. The newly elected officers will be installed by District Commander, Wayne Roy.

Refreshments will be served after the meeting.

Ribbon cutting at

new Garden heli-pad

GARDEN – The Garden Emergency Medical Service will cut the ribbon on its new heli-pad at a ceremony on Thursday, July 7, at 1 p.m. The event will be near the old Glenn farm buildings located on the south end of the Village of Garden. Refreshments will be served.

Artisans plan event

GARDEN – The Village Artisans of Garden will hold their Tour and Salad Luncheon on Saturday, July 16, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tickets may be obtained at the Garden Gallery, 6367 State St., for $10. The proceeds help support children’s programs.

at Rock Senior Center

ROCK – A dance will be at the Rock Community/Senior Center, located at 3892 W. Mapleridge Road, on Sunday, July 10, from 1 to 5 p.m. Ron Jay and The Country Strangers will provide the music. Lighthouse and Museum

open for summer

ESCANABA – The Sand Point Lighthouse and the Delta County Historical Museum are open every day during the summer from Memorial Day through Labor Day from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The admission charge of $3 for adults, $1 for children, and $5 for families admits visitors to both buildings. The lighthouse and museum are located on Sand Point, Ludington Park, Escanaba.

In addition, the Delta County Historical Society Archives will be open to the public during the summer. Archive hours during the summer (Memorial Day to Labor Day) will be 1 to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday, except when national holidays occur on weekdays. The Archives is located in the Dr. John Beaumier Historical Building along with the museum. There is no charge to use the Archives though donations are always welcome.

ESCANABA – Both the Escanaba Library and The Gladstone School and Public Library are participating in the Michigan Activity Pass program. The Michigan Activity Pass program is a component of MI Big Green Gym, a partnership between Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan, MRPA and the DNR that encourages Michigan residents to use the state’s parks and recreation facilities to increase physical activity.

The Michigan Activity Pass lets library cardholders print a pass, either from home or at their local library, that is valid for a one-time entry good for up to one week from time of printing into any Michigan state park or recreation area and more than 100 participating cultural institutions, including many museums.
