Jacobsons celebrate 50 years of marriage
ISHPEMING — Bruce Jacobson and Mary (Teddy) met in April of 1968, at the Congress in Ishpeming, Mich., sitting on a radiator at the front window overlooking downtown Ishpeming. Every year on their anniversary they would celebrate by sitting on “their radiator.” One anniversary the bartender came up to the two and said “I see you come in every year and sit on this radiator, and I was wondering why, when we have all these empty tables,” so they told him the story, and when the Congress remodeled, they called to ask the Jacobsons if they wanted the radiator, which now sits proudly on their property.
Bruce and Mary were married on February 12, 1971, with Cris and Alice Cristobal serving as attendants at Miramar Naval Station in San Diego, Calif. Bruce was serving on the USS Orinskany (CVA-34) Aircraft Carrier during the Vietnam War at that time.
Bruce graduated Magna Cum Laude from Central Michigan University with a masters degree in psychology. He worked as a clinical psychologist and director for the mentally ill at the George D. Maniaci Center (Community Mental Health), Escanaba, until moving back to the Ishpeming area in 1988 where he was employed by the Michigan Department of Corrections as a clinical psychologist, later becoming the outpatient mental health unit chief until his retirement in 2007.
Mary received her licensed practical nursing degree from Northern Michigan University in 1977, holding numerous nursing positions until opening her medical transcription service business in 1982, retiring in 2020.
Bruce and Mary continue to work part-time with Bruce contracting psychological services for Social Security Disability as a consultative exam provider and Mary managing the business operations, along with transcribing psychological reports.
They attribute 50 years together as adhering to the sacred vows they took on their wedding day — honor, cherish, in sickness and health, for richer or poorer, until death do us part.
A family celebration was held at their home with their five children, and several grandchildren, in attendance: Michele (Mike) O’Donnell Rosholt, Wis., Brett (Jen) Jacobson Ishpeming, Mich., Casie (Rod) Lucas Ishpeming, Mich., Ty (Veronica) Jacobson Stillwater, Minn., and Jade (David) Borg, Marquette, Mich. They have 23 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
