Emerald boys’ fall

MANISTIQUE — The Gwinn Modeltowners boys’ basketball team improved to 6-12 with a 60-50 win here over Manistique. Senior Austin Forbes led all scorers with 20 points and sank four 3-pointers. He also scored his 1,000th varsity point on his first bucket of the afternoon with about 2 1/2 minutes left in the first quarter.

“We started slow after we had a game (Friday) night, but we regrouped and played well in the second quarter,” GHS coach Jim Finkbeiner said.

The Emeralds jumped out to a 15-8 lead after one quarter before Gwinn stormed back to pull within 30-29 at halftime.

Manistique had another spurt to start the second half and led 44-37 entering the fourth quarter.

But the Modeltowners caught up and took the lead for good with about three minutes to go, extending it from there.

Gwinn’s Tucker Taylor added 14 points and a team-high 10 rebounds, while Dawson Laurich had 10 points.

Joey Hoholik paced the Emeralds with 16 points, while Kanton Lauzon added 12.

The Modeltowners also won the JV game 68-33.

Manistique hosts Newberry tonight at 7:30.
