Wolves repulse Mid Pen’s plans

CARNEY — The Mid Peninsula Wolverines drove into Carney with confidence they had a chance to pull out a victory. However, those thoughts were vanquished before halftime as Carney-Nadeau built a 23-point cushion and coasted to a 72-33 girls basketball victory.

Layla Blahnik-Thoune played a huge role in foiling the Wolverines, scoring a season-high 31 points for the Wolves (7-2 overall and Skyline Central). Tessa Wagner added 14 points and Maelynn DeBacker hit 11.

C-N coach Kris Blahnik said a big key was good ball movement. Ashley Theoret had six assists and Lily Popour had five assists, with the Wolves getting 22 assists.

Blahnik-Thoune “picked up some rebounds, put them back in, hit some jump shots,” the C-N coach said of her daughter’s performance against Mid Pen’s zone.

“Blahnik-Thoune hit whatever she shot. Wherever she got the ball she put it in the hole,” Mid Pen coach Phil Croasdell said.

The Wolves also came out with full-court pressure. “We had to recover from our game Tuesday (at Rapid River),” said Blahnik “We came out intense and were aggressive on defense.”

That defense limited Kennedy Englund to 11 points and Chevy Koski to five points. “The defense tried to prevent the ball from getting back into Kennedy’s hands,” said Blahnik.

“We couldn’t get a shot again,” said Croasdell, noting Englund picked up two quick fouls. “She laid off a little bit and they took advantage right away,” he said of the Wolves.

“They drove and we went to help and they passed it. They played very good team ball,” he said. “Our basic fundamentals fell apart on us. We have to go back to the basics.”

The Wolverines played without start Camryn Croasdell, who twisted her ankle before the team left for the game.

C-N, which won the jayvee game 56-21, resumes action Monday at North Central. Mid Pen (5-3) hosts Superior Central Monday.
