Redmen blank Eskymos
MARQUETTE — Quality scoring opportunities were few and far between for the Escanaba Eskymos Thursday night as they dropped a 6-0 hockey decision to the Marquette Redmen.
“They did a good job keeping us to the outside,” said Esky coach Matt Hughes. “We didn’t get many quality shots. They just covered us real well.”
Esky (7-8) trailed 2-0 after the first period, then yielded four goals in the second period.
“I thought we were still in it after the first period,” said Hughes. “We’re capable of scoring goals. Only, we didn’t show up in time to play.
“Our effort wasn’t there all the time. We were able to create a few scoring opportunities, but couldn’t sustain an offense.”
Trevor Denome stopped 22 shots for the Eskymos, who were outshot 28-20.
Tanner Phillips had two goals and two assists for the Redmen (11-3-1) and Tyler Bergwall stopped 20 shots.
“I’m really happy with how we played tonight and I thought our penalty kill was exceptional,” Redmen head coach Doug Garrow told the Marquette Mining Journal. “It was a good team effort and we’ve just got to keep getting better every game.”
Esky is idle until Jan. 25 when they visit Calumet.
