Norse men falter down the stretch

PORT HURON — A strong start was not enough for the Bay College men’s basketball team here Saturday as St. Clair controlled the second half and beat the Norse 91-78.

Bay, which had a six-game win streak snapped here Friday night, burst ahead 13-0 and led through the first half. Bay then opened a 53-38 cushion three minutes into the second half before faltering, much as the night before when they failed to protect a 66-58 lead with less than two minutes left and dropped a 69-68 decision to Mid-Michigan College.

St. Clair’s game-winning rally was helped by hitting 14-of-29 field goals, including 7-of-9 triples. The game was tied 59-59, then inside of 11 minutes St. Clair ran off 11 unanswered points. Bay then went just over two minutes without a point.

“We may have played our best first half of the season in the first half,” said Bay coach Matt Johnson. “I thought we outplayed a very good St. Clair team for over 30 minutes, but we have to learn to close out games against good teams.”

Freshman Ryan Robinette of Escanaba continued his strong play, scoring 21 points after getting 20 Friday. He was 4-of-7 on triples. Sophomore Alfonzo Fields of Milwaukee had 16 points and eight rebounds, freshman Reggie Dean of Milwaukee had 12 points and sophomore Kobi Barnes of Milwaukee had 10 points and seven rebounds.
