Jets win ‘ugly’

Eagles’ zone is bothersome

STEPHENSON — It may not have been pretty or artistic, but the North Central boys remained undefeated following a 64-56 basketball triumph over the Stephenson Eagles Tuesday night.

The Jets trailed 29-28 at halftime, but led 47-42 after the third quarter of the Skyline Central Conference outing.

“It was pretty ugly,” said Jets’ coach Mike Malone. “We hadn’t seen a zone yet and struggled against their 1-3-1. Defensively, we played okay. But this was not our best game.”

Griffin Johnson scored 21 points and Brady Eichmeier had 13 for the Jets (3-0 overall and SCC). Joey Starzynski hit 26 points for the Eagles, who fell to 0-2 after their league opener.

“It was a struggle to score for a while,” said Malone. “We didn’t attack their zone correctly. Although, our transition game worked pretty well and collectively we won the rebound battle.”

The Jets, who also won the jayvee game, host Rapid River Thursday.
