Cougars fall in grid finale

RUDYARD — Finding the end zone was difficult Friday night as the Superior Central Cougars dropped a 14-6 eight-player football decision to the Rudyard Bulldogs.

“Mother Nature dominated tonight,” said Cougars’ coach Sam Eggleston. “I’ve been on a lot of muddy fields in my day, but this is the muddiest field I’ve ever seen. It was raining, too, which made it difficult for both sides.”

Rudyard (4-5) scored late in the first quarter in the season-finale. The Cougars tied the score on Beau Rondeau’s 12-yard run two minutes, 49 seconds before halftime of the Great Lakes Eight Conference East Division match-up.

“We had an injured quarterback (with a high ankle sprain) doing his best,” said Eggleston. “Beau played his heart out in his final game. We were down four starters coming into this one. We’ve been banged up since Week 5 and it really showed as the season went on. It has been one of those season where everything that could go wrong went wrong, but the kids kept fighting all the way.”

Rondeau hit 6-of-11 passes for 113 yards and rushed 12 times for 47 yards. Roubens Fink added 122 yards rushing on 22 carries and Noah Growl had 11 tackles for SC (3-6).

Rudyard scored the game-winner in the fourth quarter.
