Berg leads Bay women XC

MARQUETTE — The Bay College women were unable to keep pace with the leaders Friday as they finished well behind Michigan Tech and Northern Michigan University in the Upper Peninsula Championships.

Tech edged Northern 27-31 for the title and Bay scored 85 points in its regular-season finale.

Gladstone graduate Zoie Berg continued to be Bay’s pacesetter, covering the five-kilometer (3.1-mile course) in 21 minutes, 12 seconds.

Escanaba grad Lauren Cousineau followed in 25 minutes, followed by Lauren Peters of Munising (25:08), Jody Peters of Gladstone (25:34) and Katy Combs of Escanaba (29:57).

Connor Robinson of North Central paced the Bay men in the 8K (five-mile) race in 33:07. followed by Steven Magnuson of Cheboygan (34:19), Devonte Grier of Griffin, Ga. (35:44) and Trent Marenger of Gladstone (42:43). The Norse didn’t have a team score.

“We had a couple disappointed runners today,” said Bay coach Jim Murtha. “Zoie is battling an ankle injury and by the two-mile mark it was going numb. Up to that point she was running the race of her life;. She still ended up okay considering all of that. James (Young) had to pull out of the race at 1 1/2-mile mark because of an ITT band issue. Other than that, everyone else ran well today. The day turned out perfect for running.”

The Norse end their season in the NJCAA National Championships Nov. 10 in Kansas.
