Four unbeaten prep football teams left

ESCANABA –Only four Upper Peninsula football teams are unbeaten as the season hits the hump mark. Not surprisingly, they set the voting pace in the poll conducted by a panel for the U.P. Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association.

Caiumet (4-0) is the unanimous Large School leader with 30 points, Ishpeming (4-0) is unanimous atop the Small School division with 30 points and Gwinn (4-0) is second with 19.

Pickford (4-0) is the unanimous eight-player division leader with 30 points.

In the Large School division, Escanaba is second with 16 points despite losing to No. 3 Marquette 36-35 in overtime last week. Marquette (2-2) has 14 points for third place. Kingsford (1-3) and Westwood (2-2) have 12 points.

Gaining mention are Gladstone (2-2) with five points and Hancock (2-2) with one.

Iron Mountain (3-1) is third in Small School with 17 points, followed by West Iron (3-1) with 12 and L’Anse (3-1) and St. Ignace (2-2) with six points.

Stephenson (3-1) remains second with 17 points despite losing 48-40 to reigning eight-player state champion Forest Park last week. Engadine (3-1) has 16 points, Cedarville (3-1) has 10 and North Central (3-1) has nine.

Earning mention are Forest Park (2-2) with seven and Superior Central (3-1) with one.

Upper Peninsula teams are not receiving much attention in the state-wide Associated Press poll.

No U.P. teams have even received honorable mention in division 1-5. Calumet is tied for ninth in Division 6, Ishpeming is fourth and West Iron is tied with Detroit Loyola for ninth in D-7. St. Ignace gained mention in D-8.

In the eight-player ranks, Pickford is No. 1, Stephenson is No. 5 and Forest Park is tied for fifth. Receiving mention are Engadine, Cedarville and North Central.
