Emeralds hope to finish grid season

MANISTIQUE – For the third game in five scheduled games of the 2018 football season, the Manistique Emeralds have cancelled and forfeited the game because of a lack of players.

Manistique was scheduled to play Westwood High School Friday in the new West PAC Conference.

Manistique Athletic Director Rob Ryan made the cancel announcement Monday.

“We don’t want to cancel games, but we don’t have enough healthy players available to play,” Ryan said.

“We want to have 14 players available for games and we are hoping some players injured will be back healthy. And we are also considering jayvee team call ups.”

Ryan said it is the football program’s goal to play the final four scheduled games and will use this week to get players healthy and add to the varsity roster.

Ryan did mention they will make a determination on Monday to either continue playing the final four games or to cancel the season.

Manistique has had to cancel games and forfeit to Gwinn (Aug. 30), Negaunee (Sept. 14) and Westwood Friday.

The Emeralds opened the season Aug. 24, losing 52-0 to Ishpeming.

Ryan said they finished their 41-0 home loss to West Iron County (Sept. 7) with 10 healthy players.

Manistique has four remaining games scheduled in the current season, two home (Oct. 5 Bark River-Harris, Oct. 19 Lake Linden-Hubbell and two away (Sept. 29 at Munising, Oct. 12 at Norway).
