Crafty Eagles subdue Big Bay spikers

GARDEN CORNERS — The Big Bay de Noc volleyball team saw something rare Thursday night, a team that “played heavily on the net” according to coach Angie Paulson.

Stephenson used that dominance to sweep the Black Bears 3-0 (25-6, 25-12, 25-12). “We weren’t used to seeing that,” said Paulson. “The occasional blockers, sure, but this was totally new for my girls.”

Paulson said it was obvious the Eagles “were a well seasoned team and they’ve been playing for a long time. That’s something that we don’t have here.”

The Black Bears are using girls in grades 8-12 with little experience, Paulson noted.

“My girls had some great volleys and showed what they are capable of, so we just have to keep focusing on the positive and move forward.”

Big Bay hosts Hannahville in both volleyball (6 p.m.) and soccer (4 p.m.) Tuesday.

Statistics: Rylie Lawrence, 5 digs, 10 assists; Holli Stapleton, 1 ace, 5 kills, 3 digs, 1 block; Meagan Yonker, 1 ace, 3 kills, 15 digs, 17 assists; Kaitlyn Massengill, 1 kill, 3 digs.
